A Middle Eastern Hibiscus-Rose Elixir

A cooling summer botanical beverage.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup organic dried hibiscus flowers

  • 4 heaped teaspoons organic dried rose petals

  • 2 broken cinnamon sticks

  • 4 pods crushed cardamom pods

  • 4 tablespoons maple syrup / coconut nectar

  • 1/4 cup dried orange discs

  • 2 tablespoons grated fresh ginger

  • 4 cups water

  • 1/4 cup rose water

  • a few sprigs of fresh mint

In the heart of ancient Middle Eastern cultures, the use of hibiscus and rose petals dates back centuries. These cherished botanicals have been integrated into culinary and wellness traditions, contributing to a holistic approach to health. Hibiscus is renowned for its vibrant crimson hue and tangy flavor, while roses bring a delicate aroma and soothing essence.

Step 1: Begin by assembling the following ingredients in your chosen vessel, be it a mason jar, jug: organic dried hibiscus flowers, organic dried rose petals, broken cinnamon sticks, crushed cardamom pods, maple syrup or coconut nectar, dried orange discs, grated fresh ginger, and a handful of fresh mint. A symphony of scents and flavors awaits!

Step 2: Pour 4 cups of boiling water over this aromatic blend. Allow the mixture to steep for 10-15 minutes, remembering to remove the mint within the first 5 minutes to avoid overwhelming bitterness. Then, infuse the concoction with the captivating essence of rose water. Continue to steep, covering the infusion until it cools completely. For a more intense flavor and a deeper herbal infusion, consider letting it rest overnight.

Step 3: Strain the infusion and serve it as is, or opt for a lighter version by diluting it with chilled sparkling water.
